Alternative Ways to Determine the Critical Time Gap at Unsignalized Intersections
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
The capacity of an unsignalized intersection, a quantifiable measure of intersection performance, is defined as the maximum number of vehicles that can pass through an intersection during a specific period. On a three-legged intersection, the most capacity limiting traffic stream is the one in which vehicles approaching from a minor street are about to turn left and merge with vehicles approaching from a major street. The process of calculating the capacity of unsignalized intersections in The Czech Republic is described within the Technical Guidelines no. 188 (TG188) published by the Ministry of Transport of the Czech Republic. The calculation is based on traffic flow and a parameter called the critical time gap. TG188 offers an empirically obtained formula for calculating the critical time gap, which depends only on the speed that 85 % of major street vehicles exceed. This paper discusses an alternative approach to determine the critical time gap for individual intersections, therefore increasing the accuracy of calculating the unsignalized intersection's capacity.
