Vědomí je klíčovou záhadou moderní vědy. Dosud ale neexistuje jeho jednoznačná definice. Kniha se zabývá otázkou vědomí z mnoha různých pohledů ve formě esejů: od textů filosofických, křesťanských, buddhistických a spiritualistických přes eseje z oblasti biologie, psychiatrie, neurologie, genetiky či neurochirurgie až po názory fyziků, kybernetiků, robotiků a odborníků na umělou inteligenci. Jednotícím prvkem všech těchto pohledů se zdá být jak nezbytnost přítomnosti tzv. vnitřního pozorovatele, který pozoruje, hodnotí a prožívá vlastní činnost jedince, tak i schopnost jedince vědomě si stanovovat cíle a „vnitřní nutkání“ směřovat k těmto cílům. Tyto schopnosti však nejsou a nemohou být vlastní počítačům dnešní von Neumannovy architektury ani neživým systémům obecně. Proto umělé vědomí strojů (zatím) nelze realizovat a musíme se spokojit pouze s jeho více či méně věrnou počítačovou simulací v podobě náhražky, tedy strojového vědomí. Bez umělého vědomí nemůže nikdy nastat obávaná vzpoura strojů proti člověku, takzvaná Kurzweilova singularita. Výzkum vědomí pomáhá postupně posouvat hranice výzkumu i v oblasti obecné umělé inteligence (AGI).

Consciousness is a key mystery of modern science. However, there is still no clear definition of it. The book deals with the question of consciousness from many different perspectives in the form of essays: from philosophical, Christian, Buddhist and spiritual texts to essays in the field of biology, psychiatry, neurology, genetics or neurosurgery to the opinions of physicists, cybernetics, roboticists and experts in artificial intelligence. The unifying element of all these views seems to be both the necessity of the presence of a so-called internal observer who observes, evaluates and experiences the individual's own activity, as well as the individual's ability to consciously set goals and the "inner urge" to move towards these goals. However, these capabilities are not and cannot be inherent in today's von Neumann architecture computers or inanimate systems in general. Therefore, the artificial consciousness of machines cannot (yet) be realized and we have to be satisfied only with its more or less faithful computer simulation in the form of a substitute, i.e. machine consciousness. Without artificial consciousness, the feared rebellion of machines against man, the so-called Kurzweil singularity, can never occur. Consciousness research is helping to gradually push the boundaries of research in the field of general artificial intelligence (AGI).
