The Use of Smart Wristbands for Arm and Daily Activity Monitoring

Background: Upper limb (UL) dysfunction limits performance of daily activities in up to 80% of patients after stroke. Wearable sensors can objectify movement of UL beyond the scope of conventional tests and increase its engagement in daily life. Aims: To describe the daily use of paretic and nonparetic arm based on measured activity with the use of smart wristband and to investigate the relationship between the activity, conventional tests and daily activities performed. Methods: Daily use of UL of 30 stroke patients was monitored for 24 hours period using smart wristband worn on both healthy and paretic UL. Measured UL activity was individually compared to performed daily and leisure activities, conventional test Action Research Arm Test (ARAT), and selfreported Motor Activity Log (MAL). Results: Significantly lower involvement of mildly to severely paretic arm during measured time was observed based on the total activity time and UL use ratio. Possible correlations with daily activities will be further described. Conclusions: New technology trends including smart wristbands have the potential for assessing arm movement in real conditions in a non-intrusive way. However, accuracy and feasibility of provided technology are needed to be further explored.
