Compressive Strength of Historic Masonry based on Destructive and Non-Destructive Test Results
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
Masonry structures have been built by various techniques using different materials, properties of which exhibit a considerable scatter dependent on periods of construction and on region-specific conditions. Therefore, it is of crucial importance to obtain case-specific information on properties of existing masonry structures. Focusing on heritage structures, various non-destructive NDT tests and minor-destructive techniques are commonly applied, while application of destructive testing should be minimized. The contribution is based on 14 historic stone and brick masonry structures that have been built in the period from the 17th to 20th century. For each building, results obtained by two NDTs are verified by destructive tests of masonry units and by well-calibrated NDT. It is shown that the use of NDT results without calibration by DT cannot be recommended for historic masonry. The calibration of NDT results by three 3 DT measurements leads to improved estimates. The practical implication of the presented findings is illustrated by the case study of in-plane nonlinear behaviour of a historic masonry wall with openings.
