On Use of WIM Data in Reliability Analysis of Existing Road Bridges

  • Popis výsledku v původním jazyce

Long-term trends of traffic intensities on the road and motorway network in the Czech Republic exhibit steady increase in road transport, both in terms of total volume and of percentage of heavy goods transport. As the traffic intensity and composition are key factors affecting the loads for designing new and assessing existing bridges, a more detailed analysis of the actual traffic flow and the effect of its changes on loads on bridges is needed and should be adequately reflected in codes of practice. This contribution discusses the background assumptions behind the road traffic load models provided in EN 1991-2, provides first insights into new weight-in-motion (WIM) data available in Czechia, and outlines how these data can be utilised in updating of current traffic load models. It is expected that the distinction between various situations may help to reduce the conservativeness of design or assessment load effects, considering a number of slow and fast lanes, types of roads, different types of traffic or dominating types of vehicles on a specific route. Particularly for specification of load-bearing capacity of existing bridges, the analysis of new traffic data will make it possible to propose new load models in national standard ČSN 73 6222. Even a single day of traffic data does exhibit values in the tail that correspond or even exceed the legal limit of 48t.
