Testing Participatory Architecture Method: Refurbishment and Construction of Primary Schools
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
The goal of the study is development of participatory design method in architecture based on mix of techniques brought from social sciences to help municipalities managing planning phase and construction projects of public schools. Methodology was tested on two primary school building projects. Teachers, pupils, parents and local associations were engaged using questionnaires and workshops in several phases of design process. Our main aim was to establish a two-way channel for exchange of information among future users of buildings and architects while keeping the project effective in terms of finance. The outcome of the project was twofold. At first participatory architecture method involved users of building to participate in creation of architectural solution that resulted in augmentation of positive attachment to building itself. And second it enabled architects to understand needs of the users and thus enriched quality of project and significantly decreased probability of impractical or user unfriendly solutions. Whole participatory architecture project was divided into three phases: initial needs assessment, evaluation of architectural concept and final evaluation. The main part of the article describes the method of participatory design with focus on how to work with different stakeholder groups and how to get them effectively involved in the participation process.
