The African catfish (Clarias gariepinus), a freshwater aquaculture species with increasing global production, generates substantial by-products that can be sustainably valorized. This study focuses on extracting fish oil and collagen from catfish processing waste containing 10 ± 1.1 % fat (29 ± 1.5 % of dry matter). Using solvent-based defatting methods, hexane was identified as the most promising solvent due to its highest oil yield (27 ± 0.9 % of dry matter) and compatibility with food and cosmetic applications. The extracted fish oil and glycerol-dissolved fish pigments were tested in lip balm formulations, exhibiting comparable hardness, spreadability, stability, and stickiness to commercial products, though pigment-based formulations showed reduced homogeneity. The remaining material was successfully processed into gelatine, ensuring minimal waste. These findings highlight the potential of African catfish by-products for producing high-value materials such as fish oil and gelatine, contributing to sustainable aquaculture practices and circular bioeconomy principles.
