The aim of the article is to provide a comprehensive view of the text type business letter, which is examined in terms of its integration into the communication process and especially in terms of basic development trends and history. In addition to the classic letter, attention is also paid to business e-mail as the most used form of business communication. The business letter text type includes a wide range of business letter types that relate to specific stages of order processing and range from internal to external communication, from official to informal style, and from one-time documents to daily routine communication. All these aspects are briefly introduced using a specific example, a sample menu. Last but not least, this article deals with the business letter with regard to its formal and linguistic peculiarities and specifics and is based on an effort to show general tendencies in the current language use and formal habits.
