To conclude, we analyse the dynamics of institutional design/redesign of Adult Learning Systems (ALS) in post-industrial market democracies over the last three decades, emphasising both overarching trends and country-specific variations. Following the first chapters providing a frame of reference to approach the study of institutional variation in ALS across countries, it provides a general overview, analysis and reflection of observed transitions from Modern ALS to Late-Modern ALS. The latter reflect shifts toward knowledge-based growth regimes, emphasising skill enhancement as central to economic competitiveness and employability. Variations in institutional pathways and dynamics emerge from pre-existing and ongoing national structures, stakeholder interactions, and responses to socioeconomic pressures, including migration and ageing populations. Despite some convergence driven by globalisation and shared challenges, significant divergence persists due to context specificities, institutional legacies, and policy adaptations always dependent on emergent political coalitions. ALS heterogeneities and their pivotal role in addressing contemporary economic and social challenges are highlighted.
