J.M. Coetzee’s Disgrace schildert das südafrikanische Universitätsleben aus der Perspektive David Luries, eines frustrierten weißen Universitätsprofessors für Moderne Sprachen und Literaturen an der fiktiven Cape Technical University, der angeklagt wird, eine Studentin vergewaltigt zu haben. Lurie gibt seine Professur auf und lebt fortan auf der kleinen Farm seiner lesbischen Tochter Lucie in Salem. Dort muß er miterleben, wie die Farm eines Tages von drei Schwarzen überfallen wird. Sie übergießen ihn mit Benzin, sperren ihn in die Toilette ein und stecken diese in Brand. Sie vergewaltigen sodann seine Tochter Lucy. Was ihm hier begegnet, scheint Coetzee anzudeuten, ist die krasse Realität des neuen Südafrikas. Der Roman empörte weiße wie schwarze südafrikanische Leser*innen gleichermaßen. Coetzee scheint auf symbolische Weise ein trübes Bild von der Zukunft der weißen Bevölkerung im neuen Südafrika zeichnen zu wollen. Die schwarze Mehrheit hingegen kritisiert, dass der Roman althergebrachte weiße Vorurteile zu bekräftigen scheint und Schwarze in diesem Roman als Vergewaltiger weißer Frauen dargestellt werden.

Coetzee&apos;s Disgrace depicts South African university life from the perspective of David Lurie, a frustrated white professor of modern languages and literatures at the fictional Cape Technical University, who is accused of raping a student. Lurie resigns his professorship and lives on his lesbian daughter Lucie&apos;s small farm in Salem. There, he witnesses the farm being raided one day by three Black men. They douse him with gasoline, lock him in the toilet, and set it on fire. They then rape his daughter Lucy. What he encounters here, Coetzee seems to suggest, is the stark reality of the new South Africa. The novel outraged both white and Black South African readers. Coetzee appears to be symbolically painting a bleak picture of the future of the white population in the new South Africa. The black majority, however, criticizes the novel for seeming to reinforce long-standing white prejudices and for portraying black people as rapists of white women.
