Niq Mhlongo ist eine neue südafrikanische Stimme, die sich nach dem Fall der Apartheid Gehör verschafft hat und das Leben in bunten Farben aus der Perspektive der Unterschicht schildert. Mhlongo, der bereits auf eine ganze Reihe von Romanen und Short-Story-Sammlungen zurückblicken kann, bringt seine Kritik an der multikulturellen südafrikanischen Gesellschaft, die 1994 unter dem Symbol der ‚Rainbow Nation‘ begann, sich in der Gegenwart jedoch durch Stagnation und Korruption auszeichnet, mit Hilfe seines anarchischen, teils umwerfend komischen Humors zum Ausdruck. Mhlongos Romane und Erzählungen vermitteln authentische Einblicke in das Leben der jungen schwarzen Generation, die sich nach dem Fall der Apartheid Hoffnungen auf ein neues, besseres Leben gemacht hat, in der Zeit danach jedoch bitter enttäuscht wird. In seinem Roman Dog Eat Dog verarbeitet Mhlongo, der in Soweto geboren und aufgewachsen ist, Erfahrungen, die er selbst als Student an der Universität von Witwatersrand in Johannesburg und später an der Universität in Cape Town gemacht hat. Als Universitätsroman ist Dog Eat Dog vor allem deshalb von Bedeutung, weil hier zum ersten Mal in der südafrikanischen englischsprachigen Literatur das Universitätsleben aus der Perspektive eines schwarzen Studierenden nach dem Fall der Apartheid beleuchtet wird.

Niq Mhlongo is a new South African voice that has made itself heard since the fall of apartheid, vividly portraying life from the perspective of the lower classes. Mhlongo, who already boasts a number of novels and short story collections, expresses his critique of South Africa&apos;s multicultural society—which began in 1994 under the banner of the &apos;Rainbow Nation&apos; but is now characterized by stagnation and corruption—through his anarchic, sometimes outrageously funny humor. Mhlongo&apos;s novels and stories offer authentic insights into the lives of the young Black generation who, after the fall of apartheid, harbored hopes for a new, better life, only to be bitterly disappointed. In his novel *Dog Eat Dog*, Mhlongo, who was born and raised in Soweto, draws on experiences he had as a student at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg and later at the University of Cape Town. As a university novel, Dog Eat Dog is particularly important because it is the first time in South African English-language literature that university life is explored from the perspective of a black student after the fall of apartheid.
