Kapitola analyzuje film Král Šumavy (r. K. Kachyňa, 1959), výrazný "film paměti" (Erinnerungsfilm), právě na základě jeho paměťové a mytické („paradigmatické“) funkce, podmíněné recepcí, tedy sledovaností či návštěvností a diváckým ohlasem.

P. Kopal in his first chapter explains why King of Šumava was included in the “elite series” Czech Cinema, and presents it as a “film of memory (Erinnerungsfilm) par excellence. Kopal acquaints readers with the problems relating to the memory and myth (“paradigmatic”) functions of the film, particularly so far as reception is concerned (attendance figures and response on the part of viewers). He deals with film (in general, and with the King of Šumava in particular) in the context of the study of memory, of cultural memory (J. Assmann, A. Assmann etc.). He defines myth in its traditional, original sense, as an “ideal example”. He stresses that the mythic function, similarly to the function of memory depends, (in the given case of film), on its reception. Getting the “wheels of memory” in motion demands „social energy (i. e. audience)”. And this is the ultimate condition for bringing the “ideal examples” to life, to presence. The “memory content”, mythic content, is not sufficient in itself. The mythic structure of the King of Šumava may not be as apparent as in other films, but, in this particular case, we could be dealing with a „living myth“– perhaps giving the answer to some of the key (and at the same time most trivial) questions related to the propaganda film.
