The final chapter by Petr Kopal is a “chestertonian” pun dedicated to the role of smokers’ supplies in the King of Šumava. The most bizarre of these are the fire-proof matches (a certain attribute of the border patrols, namely of their commander Kot). Whatever the artists from Prague wanted to say with this metaphor, they didn’t take into account the fact that the film takes place in an area famed, indeed, for its match making industry ever since the 1830s. and that their satire sounds as the perfect anti-promotion of the state enterprise Solo Sušice, the oldest and largest match-making factory in the country. Apart from satisfying all domestic needs for high-quality, safe matches, it was a successful exporter of the given merchandise; in 1959, it celebrated 120 years since its establishment. The most paradoxical is the fact that Kachyňa’s crew was, indeed, stationed in Sušice during the filming of the King of Šumava.
