At the SS Training Ground. A Life in the Training Area Bohmen during World War II
Popis výsledku anglicky
The SS Böhmen military training area (German: SS-Truppenübungsplatz Böhmen) was a consequence of the expansion of Nazi Germany. The main cause of its creation consisted in military reasons, but there was also an element of Germanizing at the same time. The area fulfilled military, economic and internment functions, which were not planned in detail in advance. Improvisation and responses to the inexorable logic of the war economy were a large part of the problem. This huge training ground, which had an area of 443 km2 and was the largest SS area in Europe, required tens of thousands of workers for its construction. However, since it did not achieve the desired priority within the scale of the Reich or the Protectorate, only a few thousand deployed prisoners worked there, or people sent here by the labour offices. The lack of craftsmen and workers accompanied the entire history of the polygon. In addition, the lack of funds, materials and time prevented the implementation of the plans. The training ground never turned out how the SS commanders and authorities had planned. It remained under construction, generously conceived, but only commenced. Tens of thousands of soldiers prepared for the front deployment here. They came from many countries in Europe, and with increasing losses at the fronts, the level of the units, which were increasingly formed from men born outside of Germany and increasingly younger conscripts, fell. The Böhmen area witnessed the receding glory of the Greater Germanic Reich, which after an unprecedented expansion returned to its original borders and subsequently succumbed to the pressure of the Allies. The SS farmyards were created here as a compromise solution. The extensive training ground occupied a large amount of agricultural land, and in order not to weaken production in the protectorate too much, economic activity continued here. Internment camps at the training ground were established to help with the provision of manpower. They gradually increased in number and reached an extraordinary concentration here. Work-education camps, camps for Jewish mixed races and also branches of the Flossenbürg concentration camp were created here. At the end of the war, troops from the training ground intervened against the May uprising. After the transfer of several units to the front, there was not enough force left to suppress the revolution, but even so, the remaining units in Prague and elsewhere hit hard. Later, the SS units retreated into American captivity.
