In SÚRO (National Radiation Protection Institute), Prague, Czech Republic, two whole body counters (WBC) are operated for research measurements and for an emergency and occupational monitoring of the internal contamination. The WBC dedicated for the measurement of low energy photon emitters has been upgraded with the aim of a smooth adjustment for rapid measurements of human organs and tissues and in order to improve the detection efficiency of the previous system. In the presentation, the design of thecounter is described, dealing with the installation of the necessary equipment in the limited space of the counter shielded room. The detection efficiency of the four-detector system has been calibrated by means of physical and voxel phantoms of the human torso and skull. Monte Carlo simulations of physical phantoms spectra are described. The consistency of bioassay data from internal contamination cases monitored with the previous counter in the past and the upgraded counter at present
