Název projektu anglicky
IoT EDGE AI computing for autonomous railways monitoring systems
Anotace anglicky
The aim of the project is to develop and experimentally validate an innovative solution for monitoring the technical condition of railway infrastructure and rolling stock using edge intelligence and TinyML. The project focuses on defect detection performed directly “from the rail,” at the level of microcontroller-based sensor nodes (MUs) integrated into the rail. These nodes locally acquire, preprocess, and analyze sensor signals and autonomously detect anomalies without transmitting full time-series data to the cloud. Key objectives include the design and implementation of rail-integrated MUs, including mechanical mounting and long-term power supply; the development, training, and compression of specialized TinyML models for detecting wheel defects and selected track condition indicators; the design of a distributed edge intelligence architecture that transmits only aggregated condition indicators to higher-level systems; and validation of the proposed solution in real operation on a selected railway line. The project builds on the results of previous projects TM01000016 and FW10010065 in piezoelectric rail sensing, IoT, and AI-based rail monitoring, and extends knowledge from project CL02000086 focused on switch diagnostics, fatigue assessment, and crack detection. These results are further expanded toward train diagnostics (e.g., flat wheels) and reduced reliance on cloud computing through the deployment of TinyML models directly on rail-embedded MUs. The project will increase the technological maturity of the solution, significantly reduce data transmission and storage requirements, and remove key barriers to commercialization associated with cloud-based big data management and complex system installation. By applying AI methods, the system will enable autonomous assessment of track condition, such as rail breakage or subgrade changes, supporting predictive maintenance in railway infrastructure.
