Baptismal and confirmation practice in the 19th-century rural society as a consequence of cultural and social identity of inhabitants

Anotace anglicky

The three-year project focuses on the Catholic rituals of baptism and confirmation in the rural milieu in Bohemia in the 19th century. The baptism meant the integration of a new-born into the local community, the confirmation symbolized the spiritual maturity and was consensual. Both rituals were accompanied by the formation of a spiritual relationship. The proposal works on 2 assumptions: the attitude to these ceremonies reflects the mentality of inhabitants and the godparenthood shows the form and function of the individual social ties. The multidisciplinary project will be based on inquiries to the Catholic parish registers of births and registers of confirmations from several diverse localities in the Czech-Moravian borderlands and ethnological research on the same areas. The transformation of both rituals will be analysed from the points of view of the evolution of rural society and vernacular religion during the modernization. No research similar to the proposed project has been executed in the Czech Republic. The output of the project will be articles in specialist journals.
