The Age of Peckham: The Role of John Peckham’s Perspectiva communis in the Dissemination and Development of Optical Knowledge, 1279–1542

Anotace anglicky

The project investigates the development of optics between the completion of John Peckham’s Perspectiva communis (c.1279) and its printed edition revised by Georg Hartmann (1542). The central hypothesis is that this period witnessed the crucial role of Peckham’s treatise in disseminating and developing optics. The hypothesis, addressed insufficiently by previous research, will be tested through manuscript research: by updating David Lindberg’s catalogue of medieval optical manuscripts (1975) and assessing the comparative manuscript distribution of major textual traditions within the corpus. The cultural transfers and European-wide dimension of the discipline will be demonstrated on the newly reconstructed Peckhamist part of the corpus (with texts from Oxford, Paris, Vienna, Leipzig, Cracow, Bologna, Pavia, Alcalá, and Nuremberg). Issues of the reception of the newly identified Perspectiva cum sit una, interpolations in Hartmann’s edition, and the incorporation of the new calculatory physics of light into optical texts will be scrutinised by textual and conceptual analyses.
