Is certainty in wrong answers the best non-cognitive predictor of misconceptions in pupils of various ages?

For misconceptions identification, 3- to 6-tier tests are currently the commonly used methods. These tests are built on the hypothesis that based on an individual’s response certainty it is possible to identify if their wrong answer was caused by incomplete or erroneous understanding (misconception). However, this long-used hypothesis is beginning to be questioned by some experts. From their perspective, it is premature to conclude that individuals have misconceptions based only on the answers’ correctness and certainty in them. The project aims to verify the results of the mentioned research and further broaden them by investigating the conceptual understanding in pupils of various ages and paying attention to other non-cognitive measures and their power to predict misconceptions. Moreover, the previously used research design for testing the hypothesis will be enhanced to make it robust. Specifically, a 4-tier test including isomorphic tasks and a survey consisting of scales for selected non-cognitive characteristics will be developed and employed together with interviews.
