Self-censorship and text ´Coding´ of Scholarly Texts in the Nomalisation Period, 1968-1989

Anotace anglicky

The research investigates the issue of self-censorship in social sciences and humanities in the Normalisation period (1968-1989). It undertakes to analyze strategies used by authors in order to publish ideas which could appear "ideologically unsound" tothe "watchdogs" of ideological purity. The system of text "coding" or "writing between the lines" in fiction has been described in numerous publications (i.e., Haraszti 1987 on the Hungarian situation in the arts; or Moss 1995 on the analysis of a similar strategy in Bulgagov). Pilot interviews with social science researchers revealed the existence of a complex system of text "coding" also in the academic publications. For example, the authors used particular phrases which appeared to support the official ideology, but which were to "signpost" an argument which would have been considered ideologically subversive if published on its own. The authors expected their readers to understand the "code" and therefore the real authorial intentions.
