The Northern Pamir languages differ from all other remaining Iranian languages in fact that inherited Iranian velars *k, *g, *x were palatalised to *ḱ, *ǵ, *x́ (cf. Shughni č, ž, š). Such phenomenon is difficult to date as there are no relevant sources on the history of the Pamir languages. The only clue is a gloss τζαβάρς ισχχιντί ‘Indic Millet’ in a mediaeval Greek manuscript from the 15th century which ante quem dates the Pamir palatalization, as Iranian *gawarśa is rendered there as τζαβάρς */ǰæwærs/.
