Bedřich Smetana encountered opera as a composer, performer, a head of the opera of the Czech theatre, music critic, but also as a listener and spectator. His authentic statements about the opera can be found in manuscript sources, especially in diaries and correspondence. The nature and extent of his statements was related to his current position and professional activities in particular periods of his life. Based on his written testimonies, the report maps the individual levels of Smetana&apos;s encounters with opera from his childhood to the end of his life.
