Ain Indianisch tuech, darauf Indianische heuser gemalt. Revisiting the Chinese Paintings in the Kunstkammer of Archduke Ferdinand II at Ambras Castle
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
Among its many “wonders”, the Chamber of Art and Curiosities at the Ambras Castle contains several Chinese paintings executed in ink and colors on silk, such as the Landscape with Pavillions or the Swans and Other Birds. They were once part of Archduke Ferdinand II’s collection and are now regarded as the oldest Chinese paintings with secure collecting pedigree extant on the European continent. As such, they are subject to increasing attention of historians of Chinese art as well as researchers specializing in the history of collections and collecting practices. Besides summarizing the current state of research on the Chinese paintings from the Ambras collection, the paper aims at discussing in detail the style and possible provenance of the works, and showing their unique value for the history of collecting studies. At the same time, it elaborates on the reception of first Asian paintings in European collections and points to the wider context of the interest in “things Chinese” in Europe. It thus hopes to contribute to a better understanding of the European aristocratic collections in late Renaissance.
