Hrozny zmíněné odrůdy byly vypěstovány v Karlštejně, kde rovněž bylo vyrobeno víno, oceněné bronzovou, stříbrnou i zlatou medailí v řadě národních a mezinárodních soutěžích. Odborná porota jim přidělila medaile a milovníci vína svoji přízeň. Je to prostě „poezie“ v láhvi. A jakpak by ne, vždyť nese jméno švábského básníka Johana Kernera. Najdeme ji ve Francii a Španělsku, Německu, Rakousku a Švýcarsku, v České republice, Maďarsku, Itálii, Srbsku a Slovinsku, překvapivě i v Japonsku, Kanadě, USA, Brazílii a jižní Africe. První o registraci odrůdy požádal dnešní Mikrosvín Mikulov a do Státní odrůdové knihy České republiky byla odrůda Kerner zapsána v roce 2001. Odrůda má v našich podmínkách střední výnos a v příznivých letech vyšší cukernatost.Karlštejnská vína z odrůdy Kerner získala stříbrné a zlaté medaile. V roce 2021 v Národním salonu vín v Praze, Vinařské oblasti Čechy, získalo české zemské víno z odrůdy Kerner 2020 v kategorii „Bílá vína suchá a polosuchá“ zlatou medaili. V témže roce v soutěži pořádané Cechem českých vinařů pod názvem „O pohár Karla IV. 2021“ získalo kabinetní víno z odrůdy Kerner medaili stříbrnou. V následujícím roce, kdy na Benáteckém hroznu 2022 získalo víno z odrůdy Kerner 2021 medaili stříbrnou a v Národním salonu vín Praha 2022, v kategorii „Bílá vína polosladká“ získalo kabinetní víno z odrůdy Kerner 2021 zlatou medaili.

Kerner gilded the vineyard in Karlštejn
Popis výsledku anglicky
Get to know the Kerner variety, which belongs to the national gene pool of the Czech Republic's grapevine and whose Karlštejn wines have been awarded medals. The grapes of the mentioned variety are grown in Karlštejn, where wine was also produced, awarded bronze, silver and gold medals in a number of national and international competitions. The Viticulture Research Station Karlštejn celebrated its 105th anniversary in 2024 and can boast of wine from the Kerner variety and can boldly recommend it to the Czech wine region. The white grape variety Kerner was bred in 1929 in Germany. It was first planted in Karlštejn in 1980, and was entered into the State Variety Book of the Czech Republic in 2001. In the same year, it was included in the national grapevine gene pool in Karlštejn at the local research station. It has proven itself here, and so it can boldly step into the next stage here, with this year's new planting. Karlštejn wines have collected the highest awards, especially in the years 2018-2024. The expert jury awarded them medals and wine lovers have shown their favor. It is simply "poetry" in a bottle. And how could it not, after all, it bears the name of the Swabian poet Johan Kerner. Kerner is a white grape variety (Vitis vinifera L.), a cross between the varieties 'Trolinske' and 'Ryzlink rynsky'. It was bred in 1929 in Weinsberg, Germany, by Mr. Arnold Herold. The mentioned variety is grown in many places around the world. It can be found in France and Spain, Germany, Austria and Switzerland, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Italy, Serbia and Slovenia, and surprisingly also in Japan, Canada, the USA, Brazil and South Africa. Although plantings are not large and are decreasing in some places, this variety is widespread in the world. According to the world database (www.vivc.de), the Kerner variety is also registered in Belgium, Croatia, Denmark, Great Britain and the Netherlands. Thanks to its pedigree, it has great potential both in the use of various soil and climatic conditions and especially in wine. The present-day Mikrosvin Mikulov applied for registration of the variety and the Kerner variety was entered into the State Variety Book of the Czech Republic in 2001. The maintainers of the variety, which are AMPELOS, Šlechtitelská stanice vinařská Znojmo, s.r.o. and Vinařství Mikrosvín Mikulov a.s., also include us, the Czech Agrifood Research Centre (former Crop Research Institute Prague)/ Viticulture Research Station Karlštejn. Taking care of high-quality and healthy material for the production of seedlings for our winemakers is one of our key responsibilities. Out of a total of 17.75 thousand ha of planted vineyards in the Czech Republic, the area planted with the Kerner variety is 71.77 ha (0.4%), which places it in 28th place in popularity out of a total of 239 of all planted varieties in the Czech Republic. The Kerner variety is grown most in the Moravia wine region, where 65.55 ha are planted, and in the Bohemia wine region 6.23 ha. In Moravia, it is grown most in the Znojmo (31.8 ha) and Mikulov (16.62 ha) subregions, then in the Slovácká (8.95 ha) and Velkopavlovická (8.12 ha) subregions, and it is interesting that the Kerner variety is also grown in newly emerging vineyards that are not included in the aforementioned subregions, but are listed as Moravia-others (0.04 ha). In the Bohemia wine region, the Kerner variety is grown most in the Mělník subregion (4.78 ha ha) and less in the Litoměřice (1.45 ha) subregion. The first experimental plantings of the Kerner variety can be classified as the period 1980-1988, when research and winemaking practice began to get acquainted with this variety and the first 4 hectares were planted. In 1989-2000, almost 2 hectares were added. Since 2001, when the variety was registered in the State Variety Book of the Czech Republic, the planted areas have gradually increased and in 2001-2003 another 8 hectares were added. Since 2004, after the Czech Republic joined the European Union, the planted areas have increased every year. In 2004-2013, another 27 hectares were planted with the Kerner variety and in the last ten years 2014-2024, it has been 31 hectares more. The growing numbers show that this variety has gained not only interest but also trust among our winemakers, which is confirmed by the newly planted area of 1.83 ha with the Kerner variety in 2025, of which 0.37 ha at the Viticulture Research Station Karlštejn, on the Vrše II vineyard route. The Kerner variety was included in the plantings at the Viticulture Research Station Karlštejn for the purpose of evaluating the variety for its suitability or unsuitability for cultivation in our conditions. It was first planted in 1980 on the Plešivec vineyard route. Its evaluation in terms of frost resistance, drought resistance and stability and quality of the crop were excellent and in 2001 the variety was included in the National Grapevine Gene Fund on the Vrše I vineyard route and is registered under the alphanumeric code ECN 24V0130022. Under this code, interested parties can also find it in the GRIN Czech plant genetic resources database on the web portal of the Czech Agrifood Research Centre (www.carc.cz), which is the coordinator of the subsidy title of the Ministry of Agriculture of the Czech Republic "National Program on Conservation and Utilization of Plant Genetic Resources and Agrobiodiversity".The vitality and appearance of the plant is good, which can be seen on the plant without leaves at the time of winter wood cutting. We cut the Kerner to a shoot of 8 buds in the winter period January-February and tie it to a flat shoot or into an arc at a time when the air temperature allows the shoot to be slightly bent and tied. In Karlštejn, the budding time is early to medium early and it ripens in October earlier than Riesling. The variety has a medium yield in our conditions and in favorable years has a higher sugar content.Karlštejn wines from the Kerner variety won silver and gold medals. The first significant award was in 2009, when in Kutná Hora at the Wine Competition Exhibition of the Bohemian Wine Region and nomination for the National Wine Salon in Valtice, the Karlštejn quality wine from the Kerner 2006 variety won a silver medal. In 2021, at the National Wine Salon in Prague, the Bohemian Wine Region, the Czech regional wine from the Kerner 2020 variety won a gold medal in the category "White Dry and Semi-Dry Wines". In the same year, in the competition organized by the Czech Winemakers' Guild under the title "For the Cup of Charles IV. 2021", the cabinet wine from the Kerner variety won a silver medal. The following year, when the wine from the Kerner 2021 variety won a silver medal at the Venice Grape Festival 2022, and at the National Wine Salon Prague 2022, the cabinet wine from the Kerner 2021 variety won a gold medal in the "Semi-sweet white wines" category. We can boast of the latest success from the National Wine Exhibition in 2024, organized by the Czech Gardening Association, where the wine from the Kerner 2022 variety won a silver medal. The Kerner variety in the wine-growing region of Bohemia, at the Wine Research Station in Karlštejn, can "make" excellent white wines of all categories, which gradually mature beautifully over time. However, they have one big disadvantage for hesitant customers: they are sold out very quickly.Wine with a poetic story! As the saying goes: “A wine without a story is a lost wine”. And the story of the Kerner wine begins in its name. It bears the name of the Swabian poet Johan Kerner, who was primarily a doctor who recommended a glass of wine as medicine. The same philosophy was also pioneered by our prominent pediatric cardiologist, Prof. MUDr. Milan Šamánek, who, together with his colleagues, won a world award for his book “When Wine Heals”. He also recommended using a glass of wine as medicine. We do not know whether he was inspired by Johan Kerner or came up with this idea through his own research, but according to both doctors, wine can be a medicine if used correctly. Just like water, wine also carries with it the distinctive territorial places where it is produced. Karlštejn wines from the Kerner variety are also like that. They combine in the wine the color of the hot sun rays of the summer Karlštejn sky, which they transform into sugars, and the morning mists and the coolness of the Berounka River, which give the wine a harmonious acidity. Then they just wait in the bottle and mature until they mature into a quality wine with an attribute and a gold medal. It is beautiful to be part of such a story.
