Ještěd in Art Prints from the Collections of the North Bohemian Museum
Popis výsledku anglicky
At the beginning of the 19th century, the veduta, along with the newly applied etching and aquatint techniques, experienced unprecedented growth. In addition to the more rarely preserved albums of hand-painted watercolours or gouaches, the technique of rapid reproduction through printing proved particularly suitable for this genre. The new trend drove painters out of their studios and into the field, where they tried to capture not only a realistic and accurate view of the landscape but also often adjusted reality to fit their own vision. Vedutas of Liberec were mostly painted from the perspective of the Ještěd Ridge. It was not until the second half of the 19th century that views of the Ještěd Mountain and the Ještěd Ridge also appeared. The collections of the North Bohemian Museum include four art prints that depict this view. One of the oldest depictions of Ještěd in the collections is a veduta lithograph showing a view of Liberec from the area of today’s People’s Park (“Lidové sady” in Czech). Based on a design by František Kaliwoda, it was prepared for printing by August Haun in 1864. A commemorative art print that was published on the occasion of the esangfest singing festival dates from the same year. The print was produced in Heinrich T. Stiepel’s printing house in Liberec, based on a design by Carl Lüer. From 1884 comes the Panoramic View from Ještěd, a unique historical, cultural and artistic achievement. It is a set of four steel engravings, which, when put together, measure an impressive two metres in length. They were created by the engraver Carl Bertrand. The originally complete art print was supplemented with seven hundred names of mountains, villages, towns and valleys. It was printed by the Viennese company of Rudolf von Waldheim and published by Anton Schöpfer’s publishing house in Liberec. Probably in the same year, 1884, a letterhead with a motif of Liberec was created. In a stylised frame, we can see individual significant representative buildings of the city. Among them, at the bottom, we can also find a series of views of popular sightseeing spots in the city itself and in its immediate surroundings.
