Joseph Kohaut (1734-1777) and Karl Kohaut (1726-1784): Thematic Catalogue of Works
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
The aim of the catalogue is to compile, organise and clearly present the œuvres of Joseph and Karl Kohaut, who were among the last lutenists of the 18th century. Their music, however, was not limited to the lute repertoire. The younger Joseph Kohaut was one of the first authors of a new type of the French opéra-comique. His other works include mainly chamber sonatas and trios that can be performed with the lute, but no composition written specifically for this instrument has survived. Karl Kohaut, on the other hand, is known among lutenists for his difficult lute concertos and chamber music with lute obligato. His most numerous works are, however, symphonies and orchestral trios for strings, as well as chamber sonatas and divertimenti. His solemn masses have also been widely performed. The book is published in the prestigious series of thematic catalogues Cahiers Philidor, directed by Barbara Nestola, of the Centre de musique baroque de Versailles. Each entry consists of a detailed description of the work including musical incipits, survived sources, testimonies of further sources and collections, references to catalogues, modern editions and recordings, as well as further readings. A general introduction gives the biography of both musicians based on the most recent research and present the most important collections of sources of Kohauts’ works.
