Medical Dissertation Theses at Charles University in the Early Modern Period
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
The research focused on the study of university dissertations and disputations in the early modern period has been flourishing in European historiography in recent years, supported by the digitisation and better accessibility of old prints. Dissertations and unique documents of contemporary scholarship and their topics reflect well the specifics of the period and also testify to the level of scholarly work at the faculty. The paper seeks to provide a basic mapping of the issue of medical dissertations of Charles University in the 17th and 18th centuries, which has not received much attention so far. It also focuses on the points of contact with the humanities, which cannot be strictly separated from the natural sciences in the early modern period. Indeed, by the standards of the time, general comprehensive education also played an important role in therapy. In most dissertations, therefore, we can find a number of characteristics reflecting the humanities education of their authors, such as an interest in history, philology, etymology and other disciplines. Very often, we can observe these elements, especially in peritexts (corollaries, erotemata or various celebratory poems). Another common feature is Latin as a basic means of professional communication and its strong relationship with medicine, which has survived the advent of modern languages in science. The authorship of dissertations, which can be viewed from several points, is also discussed. The author concludes with a discussion of desiderata and other avenues of research on the topic.
