The article takes a closer look at some recent readings of Longinus. Its main focus is on various theoretical implications of James Porter's revision of Longinus' place in the long tradition of the sublime. From this perspective, the article offers its own commentary on the archeology of the sublime's fundamental relation to language. It also returns to the issue of the political and cultural interpretations of the sublime's alleged progressive disappearance.
