Chaque langue vivante évolue constamment et il est logique que ses composants changent progressivement au cours des siècles. Bien que le lexique représente le composant le plus dynamique dans la variation, lʼévolution permanente se manifeste aussi sur lʼorthographe. Si l'on observe lʼécriture française médiévale, on peut sʼapercevoir quʼelle était assez proche de sa forme orale et les graphèmes correspondaient aux phonèmes. Aujourdʼhui, il est plutôt difficile de retrouver un mot français dont l'orthographe reproduit avec précision la prononciation.

Every language is constantly evolving and it makes sense that its components would gradually change over the centuries. Although the lexicon represents the most dynamic component in the variation, the permanent evolution also manifests itself in spelling. If we observe medieval French writing, we can see that it was quite close to its oral form and the graphemes corresponded to the phonemes. Today, it is rather difficult to find a French word whose spelling accurately reproduces the pronunciation.
