KonText in Trilingual Studies-Supporting Phraseology Translation Based on the EPB Corpus

This paper presents the results of an empirical study of selected phraseological expressions in three languages, namely English, Polish and Belarusian. Based on the EPB (English-Polish-Belarusian) Parallel Literary Corpus, this study investigates phraseology in the contrastive context, using quantitative and qualitative methods. The analysis was performed with the use of the open-source KonText corpus query interface developed within the Common Language Resources and Technology Infrastructure (CLARIN) funded by the European Research Infrastructure Consortium. The material used for the investigation was the aligned part of the EPB Corpus comprising 0.7 million tokens. The goal of this research is to provide translators, as well as learners of English, Polish and Belarusian (in various combinations) with a resource demonstrating the implementation of KonText in trilingual settings and in phraseology translation, using the example of the phrasal verb make up and two phrasemes, make [...] difference and make up one's mind. This case study also aims at empowering translators, particularly Belarusian language translators, through the development of their competence in phraseology translation.
