Der Aufsatz analysiert Franz Fühmanns Erzählung „Böhmen am Meer“ von 1963. Dabei zeigt sich, wie eng Fühmann seinen Text mit der in einer Szenenanweisung von Shakespeares Winter’s Tale geäußerten Diagnose, dass Böhmen am Meer liege, verknüpft. Einerseits wiederholt er entscheidende Konstellationen von Shakespeares Drama (die Vertriebene Hermine Traugott wird als ebenso versteinert dargestellt wie Shakespeares Hermione), andererseits zeigt er weitere zwei ‚Böhmen am Meer‘: das idyllische seiner in Böhmen verbrachten Kindheit und die Kriegs- und Eroberungsphantasie des Baron von L., eines Fürsprechers der vertriebenen Sudentendeutschen im Westen. Am Ende steht eine wiederhergestellte Idylle, die Fühmann als Realisierung eines menschengerechten Sozialismus zeichnet. Damit dieser möglich wird, postuliert die Erzählung die Notwendigkeit von Grenzen wie der zwischen der Tschechoslowakei und Deutschland, aber auch der zwischen den beiden deutschen Staaten. Damit kommt Fühmann zu einer anderen Lösung als weitere Bezugnahmen auf den Topos ‚Böhmen am Meer‘, die diesen für ein grenzenloses, transkulturelles Europa stehen lassen.

This essay analyzes Franz Fühmann's 1963 story "Bohemia by the Sea", showing how closely Fühmann links his text with the diagnosis expressed in a scene instruction from Shakespeare's Winter's Tale that Bohemia lies by the sea. On the one hand, he repeats crucial constellations from Shakespeare's drama (the displaced Hermine Traugott is portrayed as just as petrified as Shakespeare's Hermione), on the other hand he shows two more 'Bohemia by the sea': the idyllic one of his childhood spent in Bohemia and the war and conquest fantasy of Baron von L., an advocate of the expelled Sudeten Germans in the West. In the end, there is a restored idyll, which Fühmann portrays as the realization of a humane socialism. To make this possible, the story postulates the necessity of borders such as the one between Czechoslovakia and Germany, but also the one between the two German states. Fühmann thus arrives at a different solution to other literary references to the topos of 'Bohemia by the sea', which make it stand for a borderless, transcultural Europe.
