Questa introduzione al numero monografico della rivista Narrativa, da me curato e intitolato &quot;Critica e teoria della letteratura. Come leggere un testo nell&apos;Italia degli anni Duemila&quot;, esplora il ruolo e la rilevanza della letteratura oggi, interrogandosi sul futuro degli studi umanistici di fronte alle sfide oggettive che essi affrontano, tanto a livello istituzionale quanto in termini di finanziamenti pubblici. Attraverso un confronto tra il contesto italiano e quello internazionale, l&apos;articolo affronta alcuni nodi critici centrali del dibattito contemporaneo sulla critica letteraria.Tra questi, spiccano: la perdita di legittimita della critica accademica di fronte al crescente dilagare della critica amatoriale online; l&apos;urgenza, ma anche la difficolta, di instaurare un dialogo produttivo con altri ambiti del sapere per rispondere alle trasformazioni socio-culturali, politiche e ambientali del nostro tempo; e, infine, il dilemma sull&apos;utilita degli studi letterari che ci pone di fronte a un vero e proprio double bind: difendere l&apos;utilita della letteratura puo significare cedere alla logica utilitaristica dominante, mentre evitare di rispondere con fermezza alla domanda &quot;Perché continuare a studiare la letteratura oggi?&quot; puo renderci complici delle politiche istituzionali volte a marginalizzare e sottofinanziare il nostro ambito di studio.L&apos;articolo sostiene una terza via. La &quot;difesa e illustrazione&quot; degli studi letterari dovra essere fatta in maniera situata e variabile, a seconda degli interlocutori, delle istituzioni che ci sollecitano, ma anche e soprattutto dei testi con cui vogliamo di volta in volta confrontarci. I testi letterari, infatti, resistono a tutti i tentativi - più o meno recenti - di difendere la letteratura attraverso la reductio ad unum dei suoi molteplici &quot;poteri&quot; e &quot;caratteri&quot;.

This introduction to the monographic issue of the journal Narrativa, which I curated and titled &quot;Literary Criticism and Theory: Approaches to Reading in 21st-Century Italy&quot; examines the role and relevance of literature today, questioning the future of the humanities in light of the significant challenges they face, both institutionally and in terms of public funding. Through a comparison of Italian and international contexts, the article engages with key issues at the heart of contemporary debates on literary criticism.Prominent among these are: the loss of legitimacy of academic criticism in the face of the growing proliferation of online amateur criticism; the urgency-and inherent difficulty-of fostering a productive dialogue with other fields of knowledge, both humanistic and scientific, to address the socio-cultural, political, and environmental transformations of our time; and, finally, the enduring dilemma over the usefulness of literary studies that confronts us with a real double bind: defending literature&apos;s utility risks succumbing to the prevailing utilitarian logic, while avoiding a firm response to the question, &quot;Why continue to study literature today?&quot; may make us complicit in institutional policies designed to marginalize and underfund our field of study.The article argues for a third way. The &quot;defense and illustration&quot; of literary studies will have to be done in a situated and variable manner, depending on the interlocutors, the institutions that solicit us, but also and above all the texts with which we want to engage from time to time. Literary texts, in fact, resist all attempts - recent or longstanding - to defend literature through the reductio ad unum of its multiple &quot;powers&quot; and &quot;characters.&quot;
