Drawing upon Neustupný, language management activities reflect two perspectives in the postmodern period. On the one hand, humanistic ideology glorifies variation, going hand in hand with relaxation of norms and weakening language norm authorities. On the other hand, rationalistic ideology emphasizes economic needs, efficiency and stands for maintenance rather than relaxation of norms, which may reduce the variation. The paper examines two phenomena representing various forms of language management as conducted by digital tools. Related to LMT, the question of agency and specific patterns of language management processes will be analyzed, illustrated by programming languages and grammar checkers.
