Der Autor untersucht die Thematisierung des Prager Frühlings in der lettischen Geschichtsschreibung. Er analysiert, wie die lettische Geschichtsschreibung die tschechoslowakischen Reforminitiativen und die sowjetische Intervention und Besetzung der Tschechoslowakei im Jahr 1968 behandelte. Im nächsten Abschnitt konzentriert er sich auf die Reaktion der Parteiführung und der republikanischen Staatsorgane. Er betrachtet die Wahrnehmung des Prager Frühlings im Kontext der Reformhoffnungen der sowjetischen, genauer gesagt lettischen Intelligenz und Jugend. Dieser Teil der lettischen Öffentlichkeit begrüßte die tschechoslowakischen Reformen zwar positiv, die Reaktion war jedoch nicht eindeutig. Die Haltung der lettischen Öffentlichkeit war von den historischen Erfahrungen mit dem Sowjetregime und der Verfügbarkeit von Informationsquellen (westlichen Radiosendungen) geprägt. Andererseits veranlassten Befürchtungen über die Aktivierung antisowjetischer Stimmungen die Partei- und Regierungsbehörden, Vertreter liberaler Ansichten und westlicher Einflüsse in der Gesellschaft zu unterdrücken. Insgesamt diente der Prager Frühling als abschreckendes Beispiel für kommunistische Funktionäre und als Argument für die Festigung der dogmatischen kommunistischen Ideologie.

The author pays attention to the thematization of the Prague Spring in Latvian historiography. He analyzes how Latvian historiography approached the topic of Czechoslovak reform initiatives and the Soviet intervention and occupation of Czechoslovakia in 1968.In the next part, he concentrates on the reaction of the party leadership and the republican state authorities. He sees the perception of the Prague Spring in the context of the reform hopes of the Soviet, or rather. Latvian intelligentsia and youth on the one hand. This part of the Latvian public welcomed the Czechoslovak reforms with sympathy. However, the reaction was not unambiguous. The attitudes of the Latvian public were influenced by the historical experience with the Soviet regime and also the availability of information sources (Western radio broadcasts). On the other hand, concerns about the activation of anti-Soviet sentiments led party and government authorities to repress the bearers of liberal expressions and Western influences in society. Overall, the Prague Spring served as a deterrent example for communist functionaries and an argument for consolidating dogmatic communist ideology.
