THE STATUS OF ALSO IN OLD ENGLISH CORPUS TEXTS: THE GRAMMATICALIZATION PATHWAY OF THE FOCUSING ADVERB

  • Popis výsledku v původním jazyce

"The article analyzes Old English lexeme ealswa (also) functioning as a focusing adverb in Modern English. It investigates different types of focusing adverbs in the language and the criteria for their differentiation considering presupposition and truth conditions of the utterance, as well as, different types of topics (given, aboutness, contrastive) and foci (informational, identificational, contrastive, emphatic, verum, etc.) identified by the adverb in the languages around the world. It also specifies the part of speech status of the element under study in the VIII-XI- cen.-English corpus. The automated analysis of the lexeme and its spelling variants is conducted by means of #LancsBox software. The data search and visualization are enabled through such instruments as KWIC (helps to obtain co-textual information), Graphcoll (enables to visualize left and right collocations chains of the unit under study based on three parameters: strength, frequency and position) and Wizard. Moreover, the study addresses the methods of analysis of the lexeme with reference to information actualization in discourse and representation of different topics/foci types in the sentence. It has been proved that ealswa is polyfunctional by its nature, which has been explained by the incomplete lexicalization of the second element in the lexeme structure. The semantic analysis of the key word in context proves that the highlighted element functions as a focusing adverbial orncomparative conjunction, manner adverb, focusing restrictive or additive adverb. The standing and the grammaticalization of the latter are realized due to contextual meaning change. The paper highlights the hypothetical pathway of ealswa grammaticalization that implies gradual transformation of the adverbial restrictive conjunction into the restrictive particularizer adverb, that simultaneously indicated manner of action, that in its turn has been the source for the additive adverb standing."
