This article explores the role of word order in the poetics of Finnish proverbs, analyzing how syntactical structures contribute to the meaning, rhythm, and cultural significance of these traditional expressions. By examining a wide range of proverbs, the study investigates how deviations from standard word order serve to create emphasis, balance, or parallelism, enhancing the proverbial message. The article discusses how Finnish proverbs often employ flexible word orders for stylistic effect, and how these variations reflect both the linguistic creativity and the cultural values embedded in the proverbs. The study also considers the connection between word order and the overall aesthetic qualities of the proverbs, such as their memorability, rhetorical power, and ability to convey wisdom succinctly. Drawing on linguistic and literary theory, the article presents word order as a crucial element in the formation of Finnish proverbial poetry, offering new insights into how syntax and semantics intertwine in shaping the rich oral tradition of Finnish folk wisdom.
