How can a learner translation corpus assist L2 translator trainers in fostering trainees’ cross-linguistic competence in the context of legal translation?

  • Popis výsledku v původním jazyce

This research explores how translator trainers can benefit from compiling and examining a DIY corpus of their trainees’ translations. This study addresses the topic of L2 legal translation training, which as regards languages of limited diffusion is essential, although not yet visible enough. Research-informed teaching practice is crucial for teachers who move in the same direction along the native/non-native axis as their learners. For the present research, specific data consisting of L2 learner translations of legal texts have been collected and analysed in order to evaluate the potential insights that can be gained into trainees’ translation strategies and the quality of their work. The main focus is on function words in legal discourse, as in legal translation courses they often receive less attention than terminology, phraseology and genre markers. It has been observed that even advanced translation students experience difficulties with the basics, such as grammar, lexis and idiomatic usage in the target language. The illustrative analysis suggests that DIY learner translation corpora can reveal invaluable information, e.g. on types of L1 interference, enabling trainers to better tailor their training to trainees’ needs.
