Sport and citizenship – thinking about contemporary trends and problems
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
The article deals with a topic that has strongly penetrated the life of today's society at the global, national, and local levels. As many authors dealing with citizenship point out, this concept must be well understood in order for civil society to function without major difficulties. Its democratic form must also address serious issues such as immigration or the weakening of citizens' involvement in civic affairs, including sport. Sport is seen as a powerful tool for building and supporting citizenship in two main ways. First, sport is still conected the nationhood when reprezenting home country in international competitions. But today, the elite sport is increasingly affected by the growing tendency to change nationality, not only for acceptable reasons, such as moving to another country for marriage, but also for commercial reasons and for the fame of rich countries that buy excellent athletes. The second direction concerns everyday civic life, where sport can contribute to building and strengthening citizenship through its values, norms, and opportunities for participation in a community life, mostly in municipalities or sport teams.
