Schwerpunkte der Untersuchung betreffen u. a.

Variety-specific characterization of the use of forms of address in parliamentary speeches

  • Popis výsledku anglicky

This article presents the results of a corpus-based analysis of the use of nominal forms of address in German and Austrian parliamentary speeches. The data comprises 441 examples from the Europarl corpus (version in InterCorp, parallel corpus German>Italian). The study focuses on, among other things, forms of address, frequencies, co-occurrences such as accompanying adjectives, sentence position, illocutionary embedding, and strategic functions. The most important forms of address are: President(s) and corresponding compounds, Commissioner(s), Colleague(s), Colleagues, Ladies and Gentlemen, Mr/Mrs + surname, and Colleagues (female and male) - the latter occurring more frequently in the German speeches. The placement of the form of address at the beginning of the sentence, usually with emphasis, demonstrates its fundamental function of establishing and maintaining direct contact with emotional resonance, as well as structuring the speech. The preference for singular forms of address, especially in Austrian speeches, indicates a targeted and personal approach to the linguistic message. German parliamentarians more frequently use multiple forms of address within the same sentence, often including group address, but formulate the content of the accompanying message more directly and forcefully. Analysis of co-occurring personal pronouns and possessives underscores strategic indirectness and linguistic caution in face-threatening situations, as well as the use of the inclusive "we." Argumentative indirectness in the address text is particularly characteristic of Austrian speeches, which often also signal a certain closeness to the audience.
