Teaching linguistics in real life: From highbrown pursuit to down-to-earth applicability?
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
The aim of the presentation is to share experience from teaching linguistics in an English department in a Central European context. First, the academic program is described as being currently located at the point of a gradual transition from the structuralist-functionalist tradition of the Prague School to more discourse analytical and pragmatic approaches to language. Poised between tradition and innovation, the English linguistics program is also slowly starting to respond to external pressures to make tertiary education less academic and more oriented towards the actual needs of the community. The presentation considers the implications of the new situation, arguing that the necessary modification of study programs also needs to reflect the significantly changing nature of the student population over the past decade.
