In de afgelopen decennia was de vertaler doorgaans een onzichtbare figuur, wier naam meestal alleen in het colofon van een boek te vinden was. In veel gevallen gold het ongeschreven voorschrift dat de vertaler onzichtbaar moest blijven, als iemand die achter de schermen werkt en tot taak heeft de tekst in een andere taal over te zetten. De rol van de vertaler bestond erin de tekst zo getrouw mogelijk uit de brontaal in de doeltaal over te zetten en vervolgens te verdwijnen. De werkelijkheid is echter complexer. De identiteit, deskundigheid en financiële situatie van de vertaler krijgen tegenwoordig steeds meer aandacht. Wat is de huidige positie van de literair vertaler binnen het veld? En meer specifiek: wat is de positie van de literair vertaler die uit het Nederlands werkt? Dit artikel onderzoekt de positie, taken en rollen die vertalers vandaag de dag vervullen in vergelijking met de historische situatie, evenals hun veranderende (on)zichtbaarheid. Daarnaast gaan we in op de mogelijkheden en projecten die beschikbaar zijn voor vertalers en vertalers in opleiding voor wie het Nederlands de brontaal is.

In recent decades, the translator has generally been an invisible figure, whose name could usually be found only in the colophon of a book. In many cases, it has remained an unwritten rule that the translator should stay invisible, as a figure working behind the scenes whose task is to transfer the text into another language. The translator’s role has been to translate the text from the source language into the target language as faithfully as possible, and then to disap- pear. Yet the reality is more complex. The translator’s identity, expertise, and financial situation are receiving increasing attention today. What is the current position of the literary translator within the field? And more specifically, what is the position of a literary translator working from Dutch? This article examines the position, tasks, and roles that translators assume today compared to historical situation, as well as their changing (in)visibility. We also explore the opportunities and projects available to translators and to trainee translators whose source language is Dutch.
