Selbstopferung, Sühnopfer und Heldentod stellen feste Topoi der germanischen Weltanschauung dar, die im Anschluss auf die über Jahrhunderte überlieferten Vorstellungen über die Kultur der alten Germanen von den völkisch orientierten Autoren des ausgehenden 19. Jahrhunderts rezipiert und weiterentwickelt wurden. Die genannten Topoi spielten besonders in den literarischen Versuchen der Völkischen eine zentrale Rolle, wobei entsprechende Szenen oft mit Pathos und auch sadistisch dargestellt wurden. Sadismus und expressive detaillierte Beschreibungen der Gewalt sind für die am Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts verfassten historischen Romane charakteristisch. Hängt dies mit der Zwitterstellung des Genres – des historischen Romans – zusammen? Oder vielleicht mit der Integrierung der Elemente der damaligen Kolportageliteratur? Oder sind die Gründe vielmehr in der psychologischen Veranlagung der Autoren zu suchen? Im vorliegenden Beitrag werden die Rolle und Funktion der Gewaltbeschreibungen in den Texten des so genannten Professorenromans und der völkisch orientierten Literatur im ausgehenden 19. Jahrhundert untersucht.

Self-sacrifice, atonement and heroic death represent fixed topoi of the Germanic world view, which were adopted and further developed by the ethnically oriented authors of the late 19th century following the ideas about the culture of the old Germans that had been passed down for centuries. The topoi mentioned played a central role in the literary attempts of the Völkische, in which the corresponding scenes were often portrayed with pathos and sadism. Sadism and expressive detailed descriptions of violence are characteristic of völkisch historical novels written at the end of the 19th century. Does this have something to do with the hybrid nature of the genre – the historical novel? Or maybe with the integration of the elements of the colportage literature of the time? Or are the reasons more to be found in the psychological disposition of the authors? This article examines the role and function of the descriptions of violence in the texts of the so-called professorial novels and the ethnically oriented literature of the late 19th century.
