Application of SLA theories to ESP learning materials development
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
The chapter deals with interaction between second language acquisition (SLA) theories and English for specific purposes (ESP) learning materials development. SLA theories serve as a valuable foundation for ESP learning materials development since they inform instructional strategies, address learner needs, foster motivation, and ensure the materials align with the principles of effective language acquisition. Despite many ESP learning materials for different fields of study available on the market, it is still rare to find those which draw on SLA. Incorporating SLA theories informed by psychological research can help ESP teachers design effective, engaging, meaningful and learner-centred learning materials. During the development of an ESP learning material, it is necessary to consider the factors arising from SLA theories as part of the systematic design of the texts, tasks and activities. The process of ESP learning material development described in this chapter draws on design-based research, and it focuses on the development of language skills, communicative functions and vocabulary acquisition, each of which is supported by a relevant theory, hypothesis or model of SLA. The chapter includes illustrative examples of tasks and activities from the designed ESP coursebook English for Information Technology.
