Despite remarkable progress, a deeper understanding of the leadership processes in Central and East European Countries (CEE) is still an underrepresented area in the field of management research. Hence, we investigate implicit assumptions on good and bad leadership in Germany and the Czech Republic. Our cross-cultural case study sheds light on the relationship between leadership metaphors and Culturally Endorsed Implicit Leadership Theories (CLT). We argue that leadership metaphors carry implicit assumptions and expectations about good and bad leadership and their application mirrors images of culturally dependent Implicit Leadership Theories in return. Because the mass media reflects a substantial part of a countries’ discourse, our study qualitatively investigates the application of leadership metaphors in a substantial part of newspapers in both countries.
