The Republic of Slovenia is one of the new independent European states which emerged during the disintegration of multinational states in Central Eastern Europe. After an independent Slovenia was founded, citizens of other Yugoslav republics found themselves facing a new political system and a very uncertain position or were confronted with dilemmas regarding their relationship to the newly emerging state. Next to these communities, Slovenia also had to deal with the presence of minorities other than the post-Yugoslav ones ? the autochthonous minorities of Italians and Hungarians, and also the Romani minority. Since the very beginning the Slovenian political elite ? with the strong support coming from the Slovenian society ? applied on the two types ofminorities different standards. In the article we compare and analyse the background, reasons and framework behind the application of different political and legal policies regarding these two minority groups in Slovenia.
