Touching and Retouching. Question of Authenticity in Social Networking
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
Michaela Fišerová focuses on different expectations of the retouching practice in conditions of the analogue and digital documentary photography. Fišerová explains the contemporary discursive shift by referring to Lev Manovich's theory of principal technological differences between the "old" analogue and the "new" digital media. However, inspired by Jacques Derrida's work, Fišerová warns that the supposed "authenticity" of the analogue medium was nothing but rhetorical: there would be no documentary photography without the meto- nymic exchange of a part for the whole of the pictured reality. But, while on the one hand, deconstruction helps to uncover the "authenticity" of the analogue medium as a rhetorical construct, on the other hand, it does not help to under- stand the reason of the contemporary discursive shift. As Fišerová suggests, it can be done by the genealogical insight of the enforcement of a new norm of "technological realism". Social networks introduce digital retouch as a new documentary norm, which invites the social network users to edit their digital photography in conformity with the programmed menu. By adding selected layers, the uploaded documentary photograph is turned into cyberphotogra- phy, a socially normalized picture that gives up on the supposed "authenticity" for the benefit of its new socializing discursive function.
