This contribution focuses on age- and class- driven debates on selected genres at the borderline between popular and folk music in the post- socialist transformation period of Czech society. The emphasis on the reception of music provides an insight into the cultural diversification from the consumer perspective. In this context, I give attention to &apos;folk- like music&apos; as an umbrella category for locally produced pop- folk music. As a discursive opposition to these musical forms, the local reception of the global and cosmopolitan category of &apos;world music&apos; is being investigated. Even though the latter also employed many musical forms similar to lidovka and dechovka, I argue that its appreciation differed substantially, with class and age as the main social variables of the conflicting reception.
