Symbolic Displacement of Austrian Symbols and Austria in Czech Political and Public Discourse
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
Czech- Austrian relations are often described as problematic. The reasons for the disharmony are multi- layered and related to the common history of both Central European nations. Based on this, we offer the historical frame projection of contemporary societal and political development. Our analysis focuses on the concept of "de- Austrianisation" which was an important element of public debate in the First Czechoslovak Republic and became a cornerstone of the idea of a Czechoslovak state. Our analysis concentrates onthe contemporary debate about the de- installation of the "Austrian" monuments and their re- installation in the Czech Republic. Our goal is to present how was the de- installation justified, how was the possible re- installation discussed and, above all, the arguments of advocates and opponents in these debates. The debate is incorporated into the more general frame of Czech- Austrian relations.
