Hudební divadlo představuje jednu z nejrozsáhlejších oblastí tvorby Bohuslava Martinů. Započteme-li i dnes nezvěstná díla, vytvořil Martinů pro divadelní jeviště celkem 35 skladeb, z toho 27 před 2. světovou válkou. Některá z nich nebyla vydána dodnes, jiná jsou provozována ze starých edic. Institutu Martinů se podařilo vypátrat množství nových pramenů – libret, synopsí, autografů partitur a klavírních výtahů a jejich reprodukcí. Výjimkou nejsou ani nálezy či vědecké rekonstrukce děl dříve zcela neznámých. Díky tomu je možné sledovat proces vzniku každého díla, jeho recepci a osud jeho notových zápisů, jejich reprodukcí a tisků. Studie je přípravnou prací k monografii, která bude kritickou edicí a zpřístupní v angličtině komentované kritické vydání autorových libret a jeho re flexí hudebního divadla, a uvádí obecné filologické problémy a ediční zásady kritického vydání libret, dalších textů a korespondence. V rámci projektu vyjdou též kritické hudební edice oper Mariken de Nimègue, a Alexandre bis. Mariken de Nimègue, H 236/2 I (1933) vznikla na francouzské libreto Henryho Ghéona v červenci 1933. Jde o první verzi jednoaktovky z operního cyklu Hry o Marii, H 236 (1934), vytvořené o necelý rok později na český překlad. Studie představuje genezi opery na základě nových zjištění a nálezu nových pramenů (korespondence Martinů s Ghéonem, autografní libreto atd.) a upozorňuje na další poznatky, získané při pramenném výzkumu a ediční práci. Operu Alexandre bis, H 255 (1937) na libreto André Wurmsera složil Martinů pro Expo 1937 v Paříži, patrně však dílo nedokončil včas. K premiéře došlo až 18. února 1964 v Opernhaus Mannheim. Pro edici byly shromážděny čtyři autografní hudební prameny: skica, fragment původního začátku opery, partitura a klavírní výtah.

Theatre music represents one of the largest parts of Bohuslav Martinů’s compositional output. Taking into account even works that are currently unaccounted for, Martinů wrote a total of 35 compositions for stage, including 27 in the period before the Second World War. Some of them have remained unpublished to this day, and production of others have so far relied on old editions. The Martinů Institute has managed to discover a multitude of new source materials: librettos, synopses, autograph scores, and piano reductions and their reproductions. By no means exceptional in this process have been either discoveries or scholarly reconstructions of previously completely unknown works. All of this has made it possible to study the genesis of each work, its reception, and the fate of its autograph scores, as well as of their copies and printed editions. The present study prepares the ground for a monograph representing a critical edition, making accessible to English readers an annotated critical edition of the composer’s librettos and his reflections on theatre music, and deals with general philological issues, and with editorial principles underlying the critical edition of Martinů’s librettos and other texts, as well as his correspondence. The project will also include the publication of critical score editions of the operas Mariken de Nimègue, and Alexandre bis. Mariken de Nimègue, H 236/2 I (1933), based on the libretto in French by Henry Ghéon, was composed in July 1933. It is the first version of a one-acter from the opera cycle Les Jeux de Marie, H 236 (1934), and it was composed less than one year later, setting the Czech translation of the original text. The present study charts the opera’s genesis, drawing on new findings and the discovery of new source materials (Martinů’s correspondence with Ghéon, autograph libretto, etc.), and pointing to further new information acquired in the course of source exploration and editorial work. The opera Alexandre bis, H 255 (1937), setting the libretto from André Wurmser, was written by Martinů for the 1937 World Exposition in Paris, but he apparently failed to meet the deadline for its completion. The premiere had to wait until 18 February, 1964, when it took place at the Opernhaus Mannheim. The anticipated edition is based on four autograph music sources: a sketch, a fragment of the opera’s original beginning, a score, and a piano reduction.
