The first critical edition of the opera Alexandre bis (1937) by the composer Bohuslav Martinů in 1937 for the World Exhibition in Paris Expo 1937.. A scholarly critical edition of an opera that was never performed or published during the composer's lifetime. The libretto for this chamber opera buffa, in which only five characters perform, was created by the French writer and journalist André Wurmser. The plot is set around 1900 and is a funny parody text full of puns and exaggerations. The opera did not receive its premiere until a few years after the composer's death, in 1964.The premiere took place on February 18, 1964 at the National Theater in Mannheim, and on June 5 of the same year, the Czechoslovak premiere took place at the National Theater in Brno. This edition is based on a thorough evaluation of the composer's autograph and the composer's extensive correspondence, which is the source of a number of new insights into the genesis of the work. In the Appendix, the original beginning of the opera is also published for the first time, including the complete overture, the first scene and part of the second scene. The preface and other textual parts are in English and Czech, the libretto of the opera is in French.
